Beautiful

Beautiful Pt. 2: Hannah’s thoughts

Beautiful is God's pardon to the world. He could have made everything terrible, but He chose not to. He gave us a little reminder of Himself, and that life isn't so bad – even the hardest parts. Beauty is pure and unprecedented. When we say something is beautiful, we mean it. Whether it be about music, a person, or food (or anything for that matter), the word "beautiful" is not used in a light sense if we know the true feeling and meaning of it. Even people who do not believe there is a God know that "beautiful" means something different. Beautiful can be an attitude, an action, or a feeling. It's the light at the end of the tunnel, and the illuminated trees in the forest. Beautiful is creation. Beautiful is creativity making it's path through a deprived world. Beauty is also achoice. It is the opposite of bitterness. When you choose rightly, you choose beauty. Life is beautiful because we have hope and second chances. People are beautiful because God made them in His image. God is beautiful for reasons we will never understand on this earth. But our job is not to try and figure it out, it's to be thankful that God loved us enough to not let us be completely affected by our surroundings when we are in Him, and that we might see His beauty at work in our lives.Beautiful is God's gift to the world.

Beautiful

Beautiful Pt. 1: Any thoughts?

beau·ti·ful [byoo-tuh-fuhl]

–adjective

1. having beauty;  having qualities that give great pleasure or satisfaction to see, hear, think about, etc.; delighting the senses or mind.
2. excellent of its kind
3. wonderful; very pleasing or satisfying.

What is beautiful? Is this really the definition? Is it subjective? Is there a universal standard? Is it only a surface thing or does it go deeper? Is it a feeling? Is it abstract or concrete? What is the result of beauty?

This is something I’ve been pondering as I’ve worked on a piece of choreography. What do you think?

Beautiful Things is the rhythm behind Bluebird: uncaged. It’s a story of hope. It’s about finding freedom and confidence in the dignity that we are a new creation. It’s a story of redemption.

…because He makes beautiful things out of the dust.

The first time I heard Beautiful Things by Gungor was on a video for Haiti relief. I got a little misty eyed. A few months later, I thought I should start choreographing again. Beautiful Things was my inspiration.

A few weeks after I started choreographing (that is: playing around in the studio by myself), the opportunity came up to set a piece for spring concert. I was hesitant at first so I asked a few friends what they thought. The answer was an enthusiastic yes.

So, I chose my cast and got to work. Later, as the whole idea for Bluebird was taking shape. Daddy suggested I make a video of the piece. Hmm, ok, I’ll try it.

This was the first step in taking Bluebird from a dreamy idea to a reality.

Though the video may be out of post-production, the Beautiful Things Project has just begun…

What is beautiful? In July, we’ll be discussing this question on the blog. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Story

the story (short version)

Bluebird: uncaged is the little sprout of a dream coming to life. It started out as a vague idea that was shaped and refined during some of the toughest seasons of life so far. Over the past few years I’ve been trying to answer the question. “What do you want to do with dance?” Ultimately, I want to bring hope and dignity through dance. I want to encourage people to freedom and confidence in their unique identities and invite them into a story bigger than their own.

Originally, I thought I would wait until after my “career” to develop something. But in January the message was clear–why don’t you start now? So that’s what I’m doing. I don’t know exactly what all of it looks like; we have a direction but not a map. And that’s part of what makes it beautiful.

I’m looking forward to see where this journey leads. Will you join me?
