Summer intensive tips Pt. 2

Congratulations on surviving audition season and deciding on where to spend your summer training! Whether it’s your first intensive or fiftieth, here are a few things we wish we had known before we went away for the summer. Know that we're cheering you on and praying for you. As always, if you have any questions or thing you might want to add to the list, feel free to drop us a line here

Take care of your body

First of all, come prepared–you will be dancing 6-8 hours a day. As much as possible prepare your body for this beforehand. DO NOT take the time off between recital and your intensive; this sets you up for injury and prohibits you from improving to your maximum potential during the summer. If classes are not available at your home studio, crosstrain–take a pilates, yoga, TRX, or gyro (my fav) class, keep your aerobic stamina up as well by jumping rope or swimming laps. You might even ask your director if you can give yourself class in the studio.

 get to sleep at a reasonable hour–your body will thank you (and you’ll spend less on Starbucks ;-)

make wise food choices–know what fuels your body best and be smart about what to eat. Ice cream might be available every meal but will it get you through grande allegro? You might need to run to take advantage of the Wal-Mart run to stock up on some bananas and protein bars if the cafeteria is not adequate. Bottom line is take care of yourself with what you put in your mouth.

Be smart about injuries–at this level, you know the difference between good pain and bad pain. If you need to sit out or see a doctor, do not be afraid to ask. Pushing through bad pain (and worsening the situation) to impress someone for a short time, is not worth jeopardizing your career. And, no, it does not mean you’re a wimp if you sit out (but on the flip side, don’t be a wimp and sit out because conditioning made you feel like a granny). Don’t forget to ice when you need to.

~~~
Make friends–you may know one or two people or even none at all. Remember that most everyone is in the same boat. Go ahead and introduce yourself. Remember that you’re on this journey with other people. Keep in mind, the dance world is very small. Be kind to everyone and look for ways to encourage your fellow dancers. Let Jesus invite people into His story through you.
Be gracious to your roommate–do your best to get to know her, encourage her, care about her for the person she is. But also be considerate of her privacy and preferences. Communicate with each other about when you prefer to take showers (if you share a bathroom), when lights go out at night, or if something in particular is annoying you (but go about it nicely). Keep your belongings neat and tidy and be courteous of her space as well.
Call home–your fam wants to know what you’re up to.
Happy sweating (er, I mean dancing)!
Summer intensive tips Pt. 1
Congratulations on surviving audition season and deciding on where to spend your summer training! Whether it’s your first intensive or fiftieth, here are a few things we wish we had known before we went away for the summer. Know that we're cheering you on and praying for you. As always, if you have any questions or thing you might want to add to the list, feel free to drop us a line here
Overpacking is ok–I am a firm believer in bringing everything you might need just in case. Just make sure you can get it through the airport or packed nicely in the car.
 A lot of dorms will let you ship a box or two prior to your arrival. This is nice if you have to bring bedding (oh, make sure you have the right size sheets), cooking utensils, costumes, etc. Don’t forget that you have to bring everything home too. ;-)
 Be sure to pack an ankle, knee brace, and ice pack (the instant ones are convenient) just in case as well as extra blister care, toe tape, band aids, and toe pads. Your foam roller may take up a lot of space in your suitcase but it might also save your legs–if it doesn’t fit, a stick will suffice. And don’t forget the arnica and icyhot or tiger balm.
Also, calculate how many pairs of pointe shoes you will need and sew them before you leave. Remember that you will be dancing more than usual and might need to pack an extra. It’s always good to have a clean pair of ballet shoes ready for performances as well.
Don’t try to figure out why she got level 6 with sickled feet and pique turns with bent knees while you’re stuck in level 4. Really, it’s a waste of brain energy and not worth it. Choose to learn as much as you can regardless of the level you are placed in. Remember there’s a bigger picture going on. More than the director’s decisions, Jesus placed you in the level where you will bring Him the most glory. Keep that in mind as you love as He loves, and dance from a heart of grateful worship.
Choose to be yourself–and be confident in who you are. You’ll be in a new environment with lots of new teachers and styles. Of course we want them to like us but be careful not to compromise by chasing an elusive goal of being the dancer “they” want you to be. Remember, your identity does not lie in other people’s opinions (or the cast list). You are a royal princess of the King of Kings–dance in His confidence.
Don’t get distracted–whether it be boys or petty girl drama, try not to get sucked in. Remember you are there to dance. It might be tempting to critique the way that girl dances more like a chicken than a swan; your pas de deux partner’s dreamy eyes might make you wonder if he’s really your prince–whatever it might be, stay focused.
 Happy dancing!
Something to think about
something to think about
Just a little something my friend sent me the other day.
"I think each village was meant to feel pity for its own sick and poor whom it can help and I doubt if it is the duty of any private person to fix his mind on ills which he cannot help. This may even become an escape from the works of charity we really can do to those we know. God may call any one of us to repond to some far away problem or support those who have been called. But we are finite and He will not call us everywhere or to support every worthy cause. And real needs are not far from us"
    ~C.S. Lewis
May we learn to discern which causes are worthy and which ones are merely distractions and may we steward our influence accordingly.
…and blast off!
Today is the day! We've launched the indiegogo campaign!
White Umbrella – Indiegogo Campaign from Bluebird: uncaged on Vimeo.
Check it out here!
Inspired by The White Umbrella by Mary Frances Bowley (founder of Wellspring Living), Bluebird's next project artfully portrays the journey from bondage to redemption. Choreographed by Rebekah Diaddigo to original music by Todd Locke with cinematography by Caleb Diaddigo, this collaboration traces our heart's story from death to life.
the project
A stage production of White Umbrella premiered at the anti-trafficking fundraiser, Dance Upon Injustice. But we believe this was just the beginning. In creating this trilogy we want to share the White Umbrella story with a wider audience.
The goal of this mutimedia project is threefold:
-to tell the White Umbrella story cinematically through dance
-to raise awareness about the issue of sex-trafficking
-to support the work of Wellspring Living
art for the greater good
White Umbrella is about more than just making a video or telling a story cinematically through dance. Your contribution not only helps raise awareness about the realities of sex-trafficking but also equips Wellspring Living to restore lives of trafficking survivors.
Use of the finished product as well as any contributions over our goal of $7500 will be donated to Wellspring Living. Wellspring’s mission is to confront the issue of childhood abuse and exploitation through awareness, training, and treatment programs for women and girls.
thank you!
We are incredibly grateful for each and every contribution to this project. Thank you for being on this journey with us and helping to tell the White Umbrella story.
PS-we'd be thrilled if you could show us a little social media love :-)
White Umbrella phase 2
Dear friends,
Most of you are familiar with Bluebird: uncaged’s mission to bring hope and dignity through dance as well as the channels through which we put actions behind our words (workshops, adventures, live performances, and multimedia).
Our most recent work, White Umbrella, has been an amazing journey. The creative process with Caleb, Todd, and the dancers was a complete display of God’s faithfulness. The premiere of White Umbrella at Dance Upon Injustice was a huge milestone for us in that we were able to use relevant and redemptive art to combat human trafficking. But we believe this is just the beginning.
White Umbrella has the potential to be a force for good; to speak hope and life to hearts and to bring restoration to trafficking survivors
This summer we are creating a cinematic trilogy of the White Umbrella to be released online in the fall. Tomorrow, May 14, Bluebird: uncaged will launch a 45 day indiegogo campaign to raise funds for the project. Anything over our goal of $7500, as well as the finished product will be donated to Wellspring Living.
It’s both exciting and scary at the same time and we need your help. Statistically a crowdfunding campaign is more likely to meet its goal when 25% of the funds are raised in the first 5 days. More details tomorrow but would you consider giving within the next few days to kickstart this project?
Grateful for each one of you! Thank you for being on this journey with Bluebird: uncaged.
Sincerely,
Rebekah Diaddigo
